FAQ

Questions, answered plainly

If your question is not covered here, the contact page is the fastest route to an answer.

What is the free consultation?

Every new patient starts with a free 15-minute video consultation. You get to ask questions and gauge the fit; we confirm that outpatient telehealth is the right level of care for your situation before you invest in a full evaluation. No charge, no obligation.

Do you take insurance?

No. Seven Rivers Psychiatry is a private-pay practice. Most PPO plans reimburse a significant share of out-of-network psychiatric care, and you receive a superbill after every visit to submit for reimbursement. The fees page walks through the process step by step. HSA and FSA funds can also be used.

Where do you see patients?

All visits are by secure video for adults located in Connecticut. You must be physically in Connecticut at the time of each appointment.

How long are appointments?

The comprehensive evaluation runs as two 60-minute sessions on separate days. Follow-ups are 25 or 50 minutes depending on what your care needs. Treatment here never happens in a rushed slot.

Do you prescribe medication?

Yes. Medication management is a core service, practiced conservatively: fewest effective medications, clear goals for each prescription, and deprescribing when medications are no longer earning their place.

Do you prescribe stimulants or other controlled medications?

Where clinically appropriate and permitted by federal and state telehealth rules, yes, with requirements such as identity verification, prescription database checks, and periodic reassessment. Some situations may require an in-person evaluation or referral. Policies are discussed openly at your first visit. [EDIT TO MATCH YOUR CURRENT POLICY.]

Do you provide therapy?

Visits are therapy-informed, meaning real psychotherapeutic work happens inside them. If you need dedicated weekly therapy, that is usually best provided by a therapist working alongside your psychiatrist, and coordination with your therapist is standard practice here.

How quickly can I be seen?

Start by requesting your free consultation; scheduling is confirmed from there. As a small practice, availability is limited by design, and the typical wait is currently about one week.

What if I have an emergency between visits?

This practice does not provide emergency or crisis services. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. For urgent but non-emergency clinical questions, message through the portal.

Can you talk to my therapist or primary care doctor?

Yes, and it is encouraged. With your written consent, coordination with your other clinicians is a routine part of care.

What is your cancellation policy?

Appointments cancelled or rescheduled with less than 24 hours' notice are charged the full visit fee, because your time slot is reserved for you alone. Genuine emergencies are handled with common sense.

Is telehealth psychiatry as good as in-person?

For outpatient evaluation and medication management, research consistently finds video-based psychiatry comparable to in-person care for most adults, and many people engage more openly from home. When a situation genuinely requires in-person care, you will be told directly.
